Hello all,

I have posted about this before (about a year ago) but this time the problem is even stranger...

I have the following setup on 2501s:

server --- R1 (s0) --- (s1) R2 --- client

Normal traffic (pings) passes fine from client to server.
However multicast is not.

I have enabled "ip multicast-routing" on both routers.
I have enabled "ip pim sparse-dense-mode" on ALL interfaces.

I have used two tools to send/join the group:
-mcast (from Windows resource kit)
-another tool called mping

No matter what I do R2 is not sending the multicast traffic out of its e0 interface to the client (verified with "show ip mroute"). I start the client first , sometimes I start it after the sender. I have ethereal on the client and I see the IGMP membership reports being sent. R2 sees the traffic from R1 but never lists e0 in its outgoing interface list.

Eventually I would like to set up RPs, access lists, etc. (studying for BSCI) but I need to be able to get this basic configuration working first.

Anyone have a clue what I am doing wrong?

I can post configs and mroute table and anything else if needed...

Thanks,
Bryan

Use the following debug commands and see if they point you in the right direction:
Code:
debug ip igmp
debug ip mrouting
debug ip mrouting rpf-events

Have you verified you have PIM & IGMP neighbors? Can you see the Auto-RP group (224.0.1.40)?

Failing RPF checks is usually a good one.

Can't think of anything else at the moment?

Andy

Thanks Andy,

Well, I turned on my 2501's this morning. I Enabled those debugging commands. Set up my mcast sender and reciever and it worked. I changed nothing since I saved my configs and shut down last night.

Im curious to know if R2 may have the pruned the "tree" and wasn't allowing it back??? I do remember there was "D" in the mroute table, and I believe there was a P on one the routes, although I shut down and didn't copy anything. The PIM neighbors were there and R1 was RP for 224.0.1.40...

I'll be sure to use those commands as I get more complex set up going and repost if I have any problems. Thanks again.

-B
