Hi there ,

I wanted to know that , as Oracle 8i supports unicode characters ( i.e. character sets that have size upto 4 bytes per character ) , does Oracle 7.3.4 also support it , and if multibyte data is transferred from Oracle 7.3.4 database to Oracle 8i database , can it be transferred back to Oracle 7.3.4 without any issues .

Please let me know any links where i could find more information on these data transfer issues involving transfer of multibyte characters.

Thanks,
Udit.

A search of Metalink indicates that Oracle 7 supports Unicode 1.0 with the AL24UTFFSS character set. Please see Metalink document 37737.996.

It looks as if you can set up a database link to transfer multibyte characters from an Oracle 8i database to Oracle 7, and back again. Oracle will automatically perform the character conversions, but if you are unlucky enough to transfer characters that aren't defined in the Oracle 7 character set, you will lose data. Oracle will replace the unknown characters with a default replacement character.
