Multi-homing NT 4.0 to another network (as/400)

I'm attempting to multi-home NT4.0 boxes to an AS/400 network outside of the NT4.0 Server that the clients are networked on to begin with. When I installed the 3com nic I lost connectivity to the NT4 server. When I took the AS/400 network card out of the box, I regained connectivity to the NT4 server.

Question:

1)Does it matter in which position the NICs are installed in the adapter card stack?

2)Can this even be done?

So, you have:
a) NT4 server, with 1 NIC originally;
b) when you installed 2nd NIC in the box, to connect it to AS400, the server became unaccessable to its subnet.

If this is correct, I have a couple more questions:
1) do you want all the NT clients to access AS400, or just the server itself?
2) can you do it on a separate, router-like NT box, to avoid fiddleing with a server?
3) can you connect to AS400 with a new NIC?

Bear in mind, that multihoming server for two dissimilar protocols puts a heck of a load for a frames translation, so it's safer to pass this load to a different box.

The NT4.0 server has one NIC to the internal network hub - the server will never link to the AS/400.

The client NT4.0 workstations need to be multihomed to a hub that is linked to the as/400. Actually the clients will be connected to two separate hubs to two seperate servers.

Yes, when I installed the 2nd NIC on the workstation, I lost connectivity to the NT4.0 server. It also dumped connections to about half of the other workstations. (Never seen that happen before)

After installing the 2nd NIC and setting the IP and subnet ( which are different btw 255.255.0.0 vs. 255.255.255.0 there was no connectivity to either server.

Thanks for your help!

The only reference to this problem from MS I found was the KB article Q244636 - it's not much, but gives some idea.

What AS400 client do you use on your WS's?

instead of adding an additional NIC to each client machine, couldnt you put a router between the the 2 hubs? Or add an entry to the existing Default Gateway for your WS's routing table showing how to get to the AS/400 subnet(assuming there is one in place)

Another solution could be to install a second nic on an NT Server with the proper addresss and SN mask of the AS/400 network. Check the IP forwarding tab in the Network properties and set this IP address as your default gateway for these work stations.

I may not be understandning your situation corectly, if I am not- sorry. What Model 400 and are you running? Version of the OS? Client software?

I also kinda remember reading something about a conflict with installing (2) C3905-C nics on the same box. If your running that adapter try adding a different one.....
