Hi

I have the following situation

A user Fred@ourFQDN who has his email copied to distribution group (using AD account properties / delivery options / forwarding to and ticked deliver message to both...)

the distribution group has a member john@ourfqdn

When an external mail is sent to fred@ourfqdn, a copy is left for fred, and a copies are sent to the members of the distribution group. - as expected

When an external mail is sent to fred@ourfqdn and carbon copied by the sender to john@ourfqdn How many copies should be received by john?

By observation, john gets 1 copy. Is this correct, or is something screwy?

This is is Exchange 2003 SP2 (on a SBS machine)

I have always wished that my computer would be as easy to use as my telephone.
My wish has come true. I no longer know how to use my telephone.

John will get 1 copy by design.

This is true, and by design. If I send Fred, John, and the DL all the same message, each recipient should only receive one - even in cases where they are listed multiple times (such as if both Fred and John were also members of the DL).

Not to belabor the point but it is interesting to note that Exchange does this to keep mailbox sizes down. Exchange is smart enough to tell if a user already has an email.

Furthermore lets suppose that a user sends a 10MB attachment to 10 people. Only 1 copy of the message exists int he information store. All users actually see the same message. If a user then modifies that message and saves it in their inbox, a second copy of the message is stored in the information store.

Assuming, of course, that all users are in the same database. If there are multiple databases, a single copy is stored in each that contains a recipient of the message.

By implication I was including ealier versions, I admit I didn't explicitly say that.

2007 doesn't use SIS for messages, though - just attachments.

And in the spirit of being explicit, as we all know, Exchange 2010 doesn't use SIS for either messages or attachments.

2010 doesn't use it (or Storage Groups) for good reason, though. But that's a discussion for another day, and in the correct area

Many 3rd party archiving solutions provide superior SIS.

Whoa!

This is going way beyond my meagre understanding (and needs for exchange)

Thanks all for the help though. The reason for my question - our exchange is set up as I mentioned. but we have implemented an anti spam solution. My boss wanted to be assured that he didn't get 2 copied of an email by exchange design, rather than by poor anti spam configuration.

You've all contributed to that!
