MTS problems on install

I have a clean install of NT Workstation 4.0. Months ago I had Oracle 8i up and running fine, but had to start over due to other problems. Now when I install I receive the messages ora-00101 and 00102, both related to the MTS_DISPATCHERS and MTS_SERVERS in the init.ora. I commented them out, but when you hit 'retry' to created the database again, it makes you delete the init.ora file and recreates another one with the same problem lines in it. Does anyone know if the MTS is an option I cannot not select on a custom install? Or, how can I save and use my modified init.ora file to create the database manually? It's as if it thinks my desktop is a server, evem though it is a standalone machine with no networking installed at all.
Thanks,
Gary

It sounds as if you are using the database configuration assistant to create a custom database. Is that right? If so the MTS errors you are getting are probably related to an option you picked on one of the screens. Very early in the db creation process you are shown a screen that asks you to pick either dedicated server or shared server mode. You probably picked shared server mode, thereby causing Oracle to configure MTS. Try going through the creation process again, this time picking dedicated server mode.

The last time I created a db using the GUI tool it gave me an option to either create the db immediately or save the script for later execution. If this option is still available you could use it to edit your init.ora before proceeding.

Hi,
Thanks for the response. Actually this is not an option - it is an automatic part of the install to create the instance, copy the files and initialize the DB thru Confg Assistant, where it fails. I did try to manually create a DB though like you are talking about after the fact. One of the options is copy the database from the CD (create the seeded database). If I chose that, I geet the same message as when the install is automatically doing it. If I chose Custom instead during the manual creation, I did see the dedicated/shared choice. I've tried dedicated and shared both (tried to install at least a dozen times), and I even selected 1 transaction instead of the default 25. When I tried dedicated, with the 1 transaction limit, the database was created (empty), but I still could not acces it via the Forms Builder. This is just weird. I will try your suggestion of saving the file and editing the init file that way. That's a good thought. I'll let you know. Thanks again for your help...

By the way, if I save the file, how do I execute it and create the database under NT?
Thanks again,
Gary

I did this on an 8.0.6 install. Probably 8i is similar.

The scripts get saved to a directory. As I recall you can pick the directory of your choice. The scripts consist of several files with .sql extensions and one file with a .bat extension. The .bat file contains the commands to create the instance and execute the contents of the sql files.

You can edit the sql files and then run the batch file. Alternatively you can take the commands from the batch file and execute them one at a time, debugging and verifying as you go.

Please recall that double clicking the batch file will probably start execution. I did that once when I was intending to edit the file instead. A rather painful lesson.

I'll give it a try. I know I got bit by the double-click as well. Thanks much for the info - it is appreciated...
