Hi there,

I know this is dangerous, but I want to update some fields in the MSysQueries table. However, of course, Access says I don't have access to this table. How can I access this table anyway, if possible?

Not within Access. Access uses this and the other "tables" with Msys (system files) to track work in an Access mdb file. Thus within Access, these "tables" are locked.
By the way, these are not "tables" the way you think of an Access table, thus the quotes.
Now you can do a copy and paste and give it a new name to make a table which then can be manipulated if that helps.

Quoting from documents out of MS headquarters:
"These tables list all the available objects within the database - tables, queries, modules etc. So, in a way they are tables that list tables."
Expanding on definition:
"you access information about the database, which is called the METADATA"
"These MSys files are not Tables".
"every MDB Database file you open will contain all or some of these (These extra "Tables" contain Query info, Relationship info, etc). But if you treat them like Tables and try to open them, a runtime error will occur"

METADATA. And, I believe, their object type is NOT Table.

But to make sure, when I have lunch with an MS developer next week I'll ask.

You do have lunches with MS developers, don't you?

Perhaps you could do a favour to us access developers and ask your MS developer how to interpret the contents of the Access 2000/2002 system tables.
I for one would like to know the following:
How to obtain field names for each table, together with associated data type and size (if applicable) and properties such as layout, whether it is required or not, validation rule etc and post the results back here after your meal.

I look forward to reading what could be very interesting and useful to me. If other people have requests, I'm sure that they will put them in soon.

Regards

John
