I have a Word document (2003) that lists hierarchically numbered paragraph elements i.e. element 1.1, subelements 1.1.1 and 1.1.2, etc. These are automatically numbered using outline format. I also have independent sequentially numbered requirements i.e. 1.1 lists requirement 1, 1.1.1 lists requirement 2 and 3. This is based on a custom ListNum field code that automatically numbers each requirement.
The problem occurs at end of document, where I have a table that cross-references each element in first column, the requirement number in second column, and corresponding requirement description in third column. These are all cut and pasted into cells, so you can imagine all the errors that occur because none of it is tied to original entries in main body of document. Is there a way to reference those numbers from main body in the table at end of document? Should I use custom fields, index tables, footnotes, etc?
What may compound the problem later on is that this end table will eventually be delivered as a separate document, so even that suggests some kind of externally referenced file approach, such as a merge document, or excel spreadsheet? Thanks for any advice.
