Hi all,

I currently have an NT server that's already had MSSql 2000 installed on. I'd like to install MySql 4 on this same box.

Can MSSql 2000 & MySql coexist on the same NT server? And is it a good idea to start with? Are there special settings that I should be aware of?

Thanks much.

They can coexist with no problem as MySQL will use port 3306 without interfearing with MSSQL's port.

I am not aware of anything against co-installing the two if your HW is strong enough.

Anyway, what do you want to start with?
It is not a good idea to start learning both. Pick one and then move to the other.

It is generally easier to start with MySQL as it does not come with all MSSQL features and, if you don't need stored procedures and you are fine with less complex transactions, MySQL will give you top performance and high reliability.

I would uninstall MSSQL, especially if you don't have a very strong hardware.

Goo point, QatQat

To help with the transition to MySQL, try using the MySQL Control Centre that's available on the MySQL site.

Thank you both for replying.

Actually, I've been using MSSQL for sometime now. It's MySQL that is new to me & I want to learn about it. I'm more concentrating on the DBA area.

Of my question "is it a good idea to start with?", I was referring to if it was a good idea even thinking about installing both MSSQL & MySQL on the same server. But anyhow, you've already (indirectly) answered it.

Thanks again.

Ok. Thanks for the clarification.

In this case, if your box has been running MSSQL with no problem, MySQL is not going to cause much more overhead.

Go on.
