Thanks, but that doesn't tell me what smart tags are. And should I care whether or not "Microsoft products ... generate smart tags"? And which ms products would they be anyway?

In what circumstances are these things used?

IMHO they are probably nothing more than slightly annoying, they have the potential, however, of becoming a security hazard, if microsoft can just insert links into any website they please.
