I am using windows 2000 with service pack 3. IE 6 with service pak 1. i have all hotfixees installed as well. I am logged in to the local administrator account when i get the following error when trying to install msn messenger. "access to the specified path or device is denied" then when i try double clicking the file i get the error "ntsetup.exe is not a valid win32 application" What am i doing wrong or what can i check. I did check all internet explorer settings. I lowered all security settings to the lowest level. I have ofcourse tried redownloading the software. Any suggestions ? [afro]

I am not sure what you mean by this. What file should I recover?

If your on a domain, there maybe a Domain policy telling your pc not to run the install program?

Does ntsetup.exe exist on your machine? (supposed it did, maybe wrong)
IF IT does, (depending on where it is) perhaps replacing it from the CD will get you there. If it's in any temp files, I'd delete it.

Empty what temp files and Internet cache is accumulated and also clean out the downloaded program files when doing the sweep and try again. When doing this, explore all the profiles looking for temp files...and delete them. (providing it's been several boots since you installed anything.)

Have you tried starting or stopping any services with the account? IF it won't let you, you'll know there really IS a problem with the account.

And finally a grabbing at straws effort from M$:
