MSN email can't be sent with attachments

I'm trying to troubleshoot a friend's problem. He just signed up for a combo package of DSL + MSN. He's using the "built-in" email facility, not Outlook/Outlook Express. His problem is that he can't send an email containing an attachment. Well, he sends it, but the intended recipient never receives it.

What's going on?
