MSMQ command freezes computer if network cable pulled

I'm testing for network failure . . . while using:

objectInfo.Pathname = PRIVATE\theQueName

When I pull the network cable . . . it freezes up my win98 authoring station.
Isn't there a time out or some kind of a trappable error for this condition? Or
is there a better approach for network failure detection using MSMQ before
issueing this command?
