MSM Messenger - what risks?

Hi

Not sure if this is the right forum (please redirect me if so), but I've got a home PC which has McAfee Firewall/Virus Scan installed, and my daughter has just installed MSN Messenger, and I've heard rumours that it compromises security, can anyone enlighten me as to the risks, and what I can do to protect my PC?

To be honest I don't really fully understand all that I've read about ports and using routers etc. to block inbound traffic or how one does this...

certain users on MSN wil ask you to download files or share files or go to certain web links that may download harmful content toy your machine. NO AV/Anti spyware program gets every bad piece of software out there. Also it can not protect against user misuse.
