MSFT Antispyware Beta - Update 1

It should be prompting you to download and install the update without user intervention.

So far it has been functioning in that manner for my systems.

aquias,

A lot of people have said that the resonse has been "no update available."

Hence, the post.

Busy, busy, busy.

I'm special then!! Erm...well, we won't get into how special!

Thanks for the posting though Mr. Man.

Microsoft "throttles" its update servers to prevent them being overhwelmed, and quite frankly, the internet as well with Update traffic. There are over 50 million MSFT Antispyware beta users at the moment.

Second thought: the antispyware community strongly is recommending my earlier step: Add/Remove, and do a clean install with the updated version, rather than an in-line update.

So, I wanted to promote that upgrade step as a suggestion as well.

And, I am not sure what to make of: "Thanks for the posting though Mr. Man." I assume this is a compliment; the real star in the MSFT Antispyware forums is Bill Sanderson, MS-MVP.

When I grow up, I want to be an MVP just like Bill.

Best wishes,
Bill Castner

It's an honest thank you! I'm just a freak lately (friends moving away, wahhhh).

And Bill, you are Bill...I'm very confused by this whole thing.

And I'll have to do a remove/re-install. I just ran the update and let it take affect. Is there any specific reason removal/re-install is being suggested or is it just a safety measure to ensure all updates are applied correctly?

There are some odd issues with definition file updates, some odd reported instances of issues with other anti-malware stuff (Spybot is often mentioned) and the tendency to create very large .log files that are cured with a clean removal followed by a clean install.

The anti-malware community concensus is to do the Add/Remove of the old, and the install of the new rather than the in-line upgrade.

Some of this may just be a lingering prejudice against any upgrade rather than clean install, if available. As it is, I just simply do the clean install. (This is just for this program; it has nothing to do with your OS and your installed programs otherwise, or your data files).

Given the option, do the clean install of the new Microsoft Antispyware product using the direct download link I provided originally.

And I am Bill... and have had very dear friends move for job reasons. Bummer.

Best wishes to you aquias,
Bill

Thanx bcastner for the information that you provided, and have provided in the past...

I had done an update already, before I seen your post today... an inplace update, all went smooth and dandy... so no problem with the large LOG file nor any with the SpyBot...

Ben

If it works don't fix it! If it doesn't use a sledgehammer...

Bill, you are a star for your timely info. did as you suggested and viola - no problems.

thanks

The only note I can provide after several days is that the direct download version has been revised three times, and the in-place upgrade version not at all.

I will hold to my original statement: Add/Remove the old, download the newest image, and reinstall.

It does not take very long after all.... If you were trouble-free with the original, you should be trouble-free by ignoring this advice.

Best to all, and thanks for the very nice comments,
Bill Castner
