I downloaded and installed MS SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine. When I reboot my computer I can see the SQ Server Service Manager in the systray, but is says "not connected" when I put my mouse pointer on top of it.

I was expecting to see this as running, and I am also expecting to see a program item called "MS SQL Server" along with the components such as Query Analyzer, Enterpise Manager, etc.

Does anyone know what I have done wrong?

MSDE doesn't come with Enterprise Manager or Query Analyser. There is no actual icon for MS SQL Server. It's a service.

Open the Service Manager by double clicking on it, and you should see two drop downs. One should have the name of your machine in it, it probably doesn't which is why it's saying not connected. Select your machine from the dropdown and click in the services drop down and select SQL Server and it should show you it's status.
