MSCS & MQ - looksAlive and isAlive

Does anyone know the mechanism used by IBM to implement the looksAlive and isAlive functions for MS Clusters?

We believe we're seeing the MS Cluster shutdown our Queue Manager even though the Queue Manager is functioning correctly. We believe the problem must be in the communications for either or both looksAlive and isAlive. The shutdowns occur randomly.
