when i run MSconfig and look in the startup tab, i have about 15 programs listed. But whenever i boot up my system and see what programs are running in the background, i only have about 6. Does CTL+ALT+DEL show me ALL the programs that are running? and if so, what happened to the other 9 programs that are supposed to run on startup but aren't showing in the background.

No, Control Alt Delete WILL NOT show you all of the stuff you are currently running. Use MSConfig for complete control. Programs like RealPlayer will put things in your msconfig-startup (but shouldn't!). I monitor it very closely; things here will use/waste system resources if you don't use them regularly.
If they are in msconfig-startup, and they are checked, they are definitely running, despite of what C-A-D says.

Unless, of course, it's a 'run once' program such as ScanRegistry, but un-tick everything except ScanRegistry and TaskMonitor, they aren't needed. ( unless it's an anti-virus program) Andy.

I've tried that before, and I ended up losing things like my mouse (on a laptop), and things like Personal Web Server, ftp server, things of that nature. Granted, most users don't run apps like that, but un-ticking everything except those two can be risky.

The 3-finger-salute in Windows 95/98 will show you running applications. It will not however display services. Anything registered to run as a service without some kind of front-end will be invisible. There are a ton of programs designed like this. And, because of the way it works, there are also trojans and worms designed to run that way as well, as it makes them invisible to the user.
