I have a 200 that was diagnosed with a dead MSC card. I replaced the card and connected via serial Port. With the new card I cannot get the serial number of the MSC card. It reports the card as empty with any combo of PEC 3s installed. I replaced the Base function tray with a spare of questionable condition and now I can get the serial number.

A little history. The first card was diagnosed as dead because the serial number could not be read in this BCM or any other.

My problem seems to be that I am not installing the card correctly or I do not know the correct way to diagnose problems with the MSC and/or the base function tray.

Is there a paticular installation method I am suppose to use? I know that I will need to re-enter keycodes etc, but I was going to attempt to just redo all of the programming and start again.

I just replace one, The s.s. number was on the back side of the msc card below the bar code... There was a fru replace process to follow, and you must follow it to the letter.

According to a Nortel engineer I know, the FRU instructions that come with the revised MSC card ( with the barnicle or green wire on top) indicate that you need to power up the BCM without the MSC in it. This was to prevent BCM 1000's from possible corruption during the core upload. Not necessary for BCM 200/400 of 3.6 or higher. It will still work on the two smaller BCM's if you do, but not necessary.

I have replaced several MSC cards both ways, powering up the BCM with and without the card in place, and yielded the same successful result.
