MSADC Question (Event ID 8108)

I am an Exchange newbie - all of my prior messaging experience is with Lotus Notes. I'm now at a small company running Exchange 2003 on one server (Windows Server 2003, R2, SP2). Our event log is full of the following error messages:

Event ID: 8108
Source: MSADC
Category: Service Controller

"The initialization process failed".

Do we need to be running the Active Directory Connector?
