I will start with the systems spec's

Dell Inspiron L600cx
Celeron 600
128 MB ram

ok...now..

I first noticed this problem a few weeks after i purchased this dell. I have MS Office Pro and i installed it onto this machine.

The problem appears even after a COMPLETE rebuild (format and reinstall of OS and Office only) I used the Dell rebuild disc's once and then just a boot disc and my win98 disc....still got this problem:

"Here is the scenario"

Open up word
Open new or previously created document.
- the previous document has embedded excel sheets that i need to edit
- new document is a doc that i need to embed excel sheets in

Now, when i try to do either of those things with the excel sheets it tells me that the application is no longer available, do you wish to repair this function. This is all after a complete rebuild...and yes i try the repair..no go....

any ideas??

Questions:

1. did you create these docs
2. are you sure they're Excel and not MS Graph objects
3. did you install everything (didn't miss MS Graph, did you)
4. Office 97 or 2K? Have you installed SRs?
5. If you hit Edit in one of these, is Links available or grayed out?

These questions may lead to your own conclusions or may help us help you. Let us know...and good luck.

1. did you create these docs
-- these docs were created in office 97, and being opened in 2k, NOTE- this prob also apears in a brand new document

2. are you sure they're Excel and not MS Graph objects
-- tis excel

3. did you install everything (didn't miss MS Graph, did
you)
-- got it ALL, 3 times did a complete hardrive space stealing install.. ;)

4. Office 97 or 2K? Have you installed SRs?
-- 2K - installed all SR's

5. If you hit Edit in one of these, is Links available or grayed out?
-- Not sure

6.what happens if you do it with a new file, save it, close it, etc.?
-- same thing

Hope this can stear your "boat" in a good direction...thanks alot for your help.

You wouldn't happen to know if a faulty chipset could cause this??

5. If you hit Edit in one of these, is Links available or grayed out?
-- Not sure

Why aren't you sure? If it's embedded, Links (under the edit menu) won't be black-it'll be gray. If it's linked, it'll be available.

I don't think a faulty chip set will cause what I believe to be a mis-association. Let's keep moving.

Restart, no programs open. Hit Start-Run, and type:

regedit

hit enter. Browse to:

hkey_current_user\software\microsoft\office\9.0\excel

and rename the Excel to OldExcel and go launch Excel. Then, try to do our thing. If that doesn't work, rename this key to OldWord:

hkey_current_user\software\microsoft\office\9.0\word

and try to do our thing.
