Anyone know how to delete the recently used email addresses that show in the insert hyperlink window in Word?
I think this is a really stupid feature as I do not want my letter recipients to see any other email adresses.
Using Word 2002 (10.4219.6714) SP3 on Windows XP

thanks

Not sure. I do not get any recent email addresses in my hyperlink window (also using 2002). I take it this is because I do not have Word as my email editor...and have no intention of ever doing so.

I just did a check through the Object Browser to see if i could find out where Word gets those, but so far, I can not locate something that would clear that list.

Thanks, yeah thanks for trying it would not have anything to do though wether or not Word is used as email editor.
Anytime you insert a hyperlink in
Word it seems to retain previous ones as well.
However it has since been explained to me that the recipients of the word file sent to them actually are unable to see this.
Which makes mee feel a little better. Never thought of actually testing this but from what I have seen that is how it works.
Still do not like this feature....to paranoid I guess.
Would not want my recipients of my coverletter to resume see who else I sent this too........

Hmmm, perhaps, but I am not so sure about that. I send a great deal of email. I also use hyperlinks in documents. I am also using 2002. I have NO recent e-mail addresses listings in the hyperlinks dialog. That window is completely blank.

URL's...yes. Recent e-mail addresses...no, it is blank.

I am baffled as to why you get any email addresses cached in the Hyperlink Windows (Control+K) in Outlook. Are you sure you mean Hyperlink Window or do you mean in the Address Box (To box)?

If it is the latter, then this is the nickname cache and no one else can see this (except you as the user) and you can simply use the down arrow key to highlight a cached address and press delete.

You said:
"use the down arrow key to highlight a cached address and press delete"
that is just it, there is nothing I can do to delete these entries, they are just there annoying me........
Wish that delete like you said would work for me but it does not..

I don't know why Word does this, nor who benefits from it, but the e-mail addresses are held (in the registry) in Internet Explorer's list of recently typed URLs. AFAIK, there is no option either in Word or IE to control this list at all and the only way to deal with it is to delete the registry entries - it wouldn't be hard to script but is it worth the effort?

Enjoy,
Tony

Goog observation Tony.

Would deleting the Intenet cache flush out the unwanted URLs?

Darn, hit the button too fast.

I have Outlook as the email program in IE. I use it. But I have NO email addresses in the Hyperlink dialog in Word. The Recent email addresses in the Word hyperlink dialog is blank.

Where are these coming from again?

Not by me, I never use IE, am a Firefox user.....

So...there is my question again. Where are these coming from?

Repeating, I do not have any recent email addresses in my Word hyperlink dialog. You do. So where are they coming from?

I never asked it as a direct question (just hinted at it)...but, are you using (or are you not using) Word as your email editor?

Hi Yachtie

I've managed to replicate the problem you are having in Word (and now, like you, I can't get rid of the email addresses!!).

It occurs when, in Word, you type a hyperlink to an email address and use the Hyperlink (Ctrl+K) menu item to allocate an automatic subject heading etc. So that when someone clicks on the hyperlink not only does it open their email program with the email address but also inserts your subject heading. When you do this the email address then appears in the recently used email address list and you can't delete them.

Microsoft have the following information on deleting the hyperlink most recently used files list but as others have mentioned it does require you to edit the registry key.

Cheers
Karen

There seems to be some confusion here between e-mail addresses (as held in address books) and URLs (URIs if you want to be politically correct).

Hyperlinks in Word are URLs - e-mail addresses are URLs using the "mailto" protocol. One wouldn't normally type such a URL into IE but try entering "mailto:test@example.com" in the address bar in IE; your favourite e-mail program will be brought up for you to enter your e-mail. Cancel it (or write an e-mail if you want), close IE (you must do this in order for the registry entry to be rewritten - I'm using IE7 so closing IE closed all the tabs, if you're using IE6 you probably need to close all instances) and then open Word and you will see "test@example.com" as an e-mail hyperlink in the list.

The list can be cleared by deleting history in IE; I'm no expert in this area but I think this may delete a lot more besides.

Enjoy,
Tony

OK, so now I've duplicated it as well. And yes, they are held in the registry when you use a Mailto as the address in a hyperlink in Word.

HKEY_Current_User/Software/Microsoft/Internet Explorer/TypedURLs

HKEY_Current_User/Software/Microsoft/Office/10.0/Common/Internet. The key here is UseRWHlinkNavigation.

As Tony mentions, yes you could script it to remove them, but is it worth it. No one should be seeing these...I think. No, not if they are held in Current_User on that machine.

I did go in and delete the items, but only because using a mailto hyperlink in Word is not something I normally do.
