MS Word Check boxes become "9"

In MS Word 2000 my checkboxes have become "9"s

Any ideas?

Initial thought is font. If you've used a specific font to show a particular symbol (i.e. wingdings)and the font has been changed back to a standard one then symbols often show as characters
