I would greatly appreciate advice on overcoming WINWORD performing an illegal operation upon program launch - it causes an IPF in module <unknown> at 0000:6ed845db, and the program shuts down. I've also noticed that every time I view my templates through windows explorer (which is the only way I'm able to open word without it crashing!), the NORMAL.DOT template automatically copies itself, appearing as ~$NORMAL.DOT.Checking properties, it has the attributes of hidden and archive marked. Deleting doesn't help, as it just continues to replicate itself everytime on startup. I have thoroughly scanned my system for viruses(clean); have tried holding down the left shift key on program launch to supress auto macros loading (still crashes!); have checked for malicious codes by exploring Tools>Macros>Visual Basic Editor (all appears ok). The only other option I can think of is adding a startup switch to the end of the winword.exe path, but I'm not sure if this will actually get rid of the problem??

~$NORMAL.DOT

This file is normal to see when Word is open. It is the global document template that becomes in use whenever a document is open.

If you are seeing it while Word is closed, do a ctrl-alt-del and make sure that Word isn't hanging out there in the background.

See my FAQ on Troubleshooting Word 97 and 2000. Look closer to the top of the screen for the FAQ tab. Take each step one by one until it's repaired. The only time it does not work is when people want to take shortcuts while performing the steps.

Hope this helps.
