MS Word 2003 - Style Templates

I am trying to construct a new word template with my own specific headers but I am having problems with auto numbering after headers and continuation of numbering. I want this automated so when you choose the style i.e. ST1 (for main heading) the next line auto numbers - not a problem, but when I add another heading the paragrah numbers do not reflect the main heading number

The following represents what I want to do:
1. Main Heading

1.1 some content in this areas
1.2 more content in this area

2. Second main Heading

2.1 Second Section Content
2.2 Second more content

3. Third main heading

3.1 Sub heading
Content content contet

3.2 Another Subheadding
Contet content content

What I can do is:-

1. Main Heading

1.1 some content in this areas
1.2 more content in this area

2. Second main Heading

1.3 Second Section Content
1.4 Second more content

3. Third main heading

3.1 Sub heading
Content content contet

3.2 Another Subheadding
Contet content content
