We are attempting to [upon opening MS Word] automatically update/refresh an AutoText field [FileName]. The file name of the document changes to reflect the latest revision number. We would like to display [FileName] via an AutoText field, but have been unsucessful at automatically updating/refreshing upon reopening the document.

FileName is normally a Field, not an AutoText. However, of course you can use AutoText to insert the Filename field. Is this what you are doing?

In any case, if you insert the FileName field (either directly or by AutoText), and say the document filename is Version1.doc, then the field result will be Version1.doc.

If you then use SaveAs to save the file as Version3.doc, and close it, yes, if you reopen it the field will still be Version1. Maybe 2003, or 2007 have a automatic update of fields, but 2002 does not. There IS an automatic update of field when printing. Tools > Options > Print tab > check "Update fields".

Other than that, you have to update the fields as suggested by Help.
Update fields to show the latest results
Do one of the following:

To update a single field, click the field or the field results, and then press F9.

To update all fields in a document, click Select All on the Edit menu, and then press F9.

Tip

You can update all fields in a document each time you print it. Click Options on the Tools menu, click the Print tab, and then select the Update fields check box.
It can be done automatically on document open via VBA.
