This arises from It was noted that when Word is already running, and you double-click on a Word document, a new 'instance' of Word will sometimes start. This is distinct from having two windows and two entries in the Taskbar, which has been the rule from Word 2000. If you close one document, its taskbar entry is still there, showing 'Word' but no document. I've found the system inconsistent - sometimes it will use the existing 'instance' and sometimes not.

The thread referred to []. I read it as saying that it's all the same instance, but I may be wrong.

Hi Madawc,

You can verify the instance # via the Windows Task Manager. Simply look in the Processes tab and see how many instances of Winword.exe are running.
