I dont know whats going on but I can establish a connection fine and do all that but when I try an browse the servers shared folders nothing happens.

The server is ISDN DOV (to internet) and the client is dial up 56k (to internet).
I can connect from another computer (elsewhere) and browse to the orther computer in the shed (on lan) but cant see the servers shared files.

I can ping and tracert the server fine.

The VPN doesnt support multiple connections. I even created a profile on the server and logged on but no-one else could log on. I have tried static ip's for the clients and assigned ip's. As long as there is no one on the vpn I can connect but cannot browse server.

When I set up a client up on the server and logged on to the server I still couldnt browse shared folder.

It all seems a bit stuffed up.

How can I log on remotely and not see the servers files??
The VPN server doesnt give you a hell of alot of settings but all are believed to be correct and the cleint can log on but how is it that only one person can log on to the vpn? (bit strange)

Any help at all would deserve a hug as this has plagued me all day. I can think of is to reload the server OS as it has been a bit silly at start up for the last week.
OS: XP pro 2 XP pro & all sp's in place.

Easy question first.

'how is it that only one person can log on to the vpn?" . .

XP supports only one inbound connection at a time. Built in limitation. If you need more than one inbound connection, you need something else for a server, either a server version of Windows, some kind of 'hardware' based VPN server, or a box running linux. I prefer the latter.

Beyond that, I don't really understand the problem you are describing. Sounds like a name resolution issue or routing or both.

I get the idea that you can make a VPN connection and afterwards you can ping the VPN server. Which address are you pinging, the external address (the one you use to make the VPN connection) or the VPN tunnel address? (I should note at this point, I often get on a rant about ping not working. Ping always works, just returns an error message some times. Please provide the complete error message if at some point you do a ping and it 'doesn't work'. Tx).

Looking at the ipconfig output, only thing I would change is the address assigned to the VPN interface, try using something in the 192.168.0.xxx range to match your LAN range. Not technically correct in the real world, but it works better in Microsoft Land. Also, if there is a network on the client side, make sure that it is using a different network address. Routing can't work otherwise.

Since your client is running on dialup, don't count on any kind of speed when browsing the network. You should be able to see the drives/folders when everything is configured correctly, but moving files will be extremely slow.

Another thing to try for troubleshooting purposes, click start then run. In the box, type '\\computername' and press enter (replacing the 'computername' with the name of one of the server side computers with shared resorces. If that doesn't work, try again with '\\192.168.0.xxx' replacing the 192.168.0.xxx with the IP of the same computer.

Give those a try and post back. Try to be as descriptive of errors as possible. Include error numbers and text if you can.

Good luck.

Thanks for the detailed reply.

Firstly:
I was able to ping the name of the client computer which had established a connection to the server.
All pings were successful and no error messages.
I typed "ping karley" and all was ok. I will do it again and post the results.

You are right about the single client as this is the same with win2k also apparently. Not a real issue at this stage.

The real issue is that I can not browse the server. I get no error messages it shows my computer on the network when browsing (shared folders and that) but not the other computer.

I have created profiles on both computers for both users. It is as if it is not there at all. I can ping it but not acess data.

I will connect up again later with the ammended VPN interface address to the same adress as the server on the lan ( same computer) 192.168.0.1 and then post the results of an ipconfig whilst connected. I am sure that I have tried this befor to no avail.

Any other ideas?
Thanks again.
