My organization is considering a migration from Oracle 8i to SQL Server 2000. We have already developed a number of Impromptu reports and PP Cubes using 7.0.

My question is this.....

If all of the tables and columns in my SQL Server DB are going to match those that existed in my Oracle DB, is there a sensible manner in which I can migrate the Impromptu Catalog.

I am trying to identify a method that will not require me to rewrite all of my impromptu reports. I don't expect a 100% success rate, if I can however salvage any of the reports I will be happy.

rpetway,

You should actually have a good deal of success with this. Cognos isolates the metadata from the report within the catalog. To the extent that the datatypes are equivalent, the catalog should be easily ported to the new data source. To try this, after you have a test copy of your new data in Oracle, define a new logical database thru Catalog | Databases under the Oracle option. Then in a copy of your catalog, change the Catalog Database (under Catalog | Tables) to point to the newly defined Oracle logical database name. Then click on the right side of the screen to validate the database catalog definition. If nothing comes back with a red slash through it, then the catalog database change was accepted without further modification. If anything comes back red you will have to investigate the datatype change, and potentially touch any report that uses that column.
