One of our SA's accidentally installed MS SQL7 on our web server. We hav been experiencing database connect problems, and I wonder if this is related.

If this is a question realted to Opentext livelink ?
If you wanted to connect livelink to a database either way you would need a client or the DB program.Sometimes install of older/newer programs on can tip the balance .If you can bring up sql's way of reaching a database( i come form oracle and to check whether livelink can access the oracle db we tend to use sqlplus,so similarly I think SQL server has something called tsql or so)you could check connectivity. Also you said that somebody installed sql7 on your webserver ?.Wouldn't you rather debug by turning logs on your opentext.ini file for full or 11 ans see what you get.

Well, if I called the wrong number, why did you answer the phone?
