MS Outlook Having Problems with Outbox 1

Good day,

I am using a POP3 server to host my email.

I have created an account in MS Outlook connected to my POP3.

Everything was working fine.

This morning, when I went to send a message the message stayed in the Outbox all morning, but the intended recipient called me to ask me to stop sending the message that they had received it several times.

I was able to send several other test messages in the interim and they all sent ok and did not appear in my Outbox.

The way this is configured is that I have the incoming mail pointing to my POP3 mail server, and my outgoing mail is pointing to my local ISP.

Is this an issue with my ISP/outgoing mail, my settings in Outlook, other?

Any and all help is appreciated.

Thanks,

It could be related to a timeout setting with your ISP or possibly related to your antivirus software (if you have an outgoing scan option).

Basically, when you transmit a mail message to your smtp server, the last part of the transmission is a sort of message to the mail server. Your client software (Outlook) knows when all the data has been sent, so it sends a sort of that's all, I'm done. When the mail server get's that, it replys with a OK-like response & passes the mail along to the next server. When your client gets this OK response from the server, it moves the messages from outbox to the sent folder.

So, for some reason in your case the trasmission was sent, but your client never received the OK from the server, so it tries again.....

Was there any attachment to this message that might be scanned by a virus scanner? Anyway, if it was only a one time thing, I wouldn't worry about it too much. If it happens again, look to increase your timeout settings with the server or turn off outgoing virus scanning.

Thanks so much for your help.

There is a 'Server Timeouts' section under the Advanced tab. Is this where I would increase the timeout settings or would I need to contact my ISP that handles my outgoing mail?

What would you recommend I set it to?

Is there any danger in turning off the outgoing mail virus scanning? I am running daily scans.

Thanks for all your help!

First, I wouldn't change anything unless this becomes a regular problem; if it only happened that 1 time, I wouldn't worry about it. Yes, that is the timeout setting that I was referring to, but your antivirus scanning is the more likely culprit. There is always some increased danger with a reduction in security practices. The danger is that your outgoing messages could contain a virus if you were infected, but if you're doing full daily scans anyway, the likelyhood is reduced.
