Hi,

In MS Outlook, when try to receive mails, I got error
"The TCP/IP connection was unexpectedly terminated by the server......Error Number:0x800ccc0f)."
This only happens for one email account and only happens in resent week. No error for the rest email accounts.

Any idea?

Thank you in advance.

Make sure the username and password you are passing are correct.

The answer is "42"

franklin97355,

Thank you.
They are correct....Although cannot receive emails, I can send emails by the account!

Howdy, Stranger (sorry, couldn't resist)

The SMTP server may not require a login (many don't) so being able to send is not conclusive evidence the login is OK. However I suspect you are getting logged in because otherwise you would be getting a different error message.

This is a bit of a chatchall error message which essentially means message transfer was initiated and never completed and the server terminated (timed out). This can be the result of modem problems, config problems or, most frequently problems with the mail server or the contents of the mailbox, such as a message with no body or bad characters in the subject, etc. Another common cause is email scanners or proxies - try shutting them down temporarily and see if then you can clear the mailbox.

Check out this link:

If you can webmail into the mailbox or Telnet into it, try deleting the first message. That will usually unblock things. If you can't do that then you may be able to get around it by using another email client temporarily or by downloading message headers from that account and then marking any funny looking ones to delete without reading them.

JockMullin,

Thank you for your long information which I need to study carefully.
Before give you feedback, I should add two more details.
1. When I said "This only happens for one email account" I meant for one email box (sorry): aaa@sameName.com, bbb@sameName.com,ccc@sameName.com,...all cannot recieve emails, but aaa@otherName.com no problem.
2. When I receive emails from the account, it even showed the total number of emails in the account but then fail to receive any of them.

JockMullin,

No...no good. Do you think the email provider can do something to stop recieving emails by Outlook?

Hi, Stranger123

The fact Outlook is determining the number of emails in the mailbox suggests it is getting logged in and trying to pick up the messages.

That is why I suggested configuring it to download headers only.

However, assuming it is a POP3 it is possible though I would think unlikely that they would not be supported by Outlook, since POP3 is a very simple protocol. What software does the mail provider recommend you use?

What I would do at this juncture is telnet into the mailbox and see what is going on. This link gives a set by step tutorial on how to telnet into your POP3 mailbox(es) and check it/them out:

The only other suggestion I can think of is to try increasing the server timeout setting in Outlook, but I don't really think that is the problem because your error says the host is terminating the connection. At least in a telnet session you could actually see any traffic from the host preceding the disconnect.

Hi,

I did increased the server timeout up to 5 minutes in Outlook but as you expected it failed in 10 seconds.

I tried "telnet". The longest way I can go was "list" and "retr". Most cases are "Connection to host lost" immediately after I typed the "user" (my typing speed is OK). So, I could never finish "telnet".

BTW, I can open those email account by Web.

Hi, again

Well, that pretty much cinches it - the problem does not lie with Outlook, it is the host terminating the connection and it doesn't matter what the client software is.

Possibly the mail provider is no longer supporting port 110 accsss and is forcing you towards using webmail or whatever (MAPI?).

I think it is time to consult them on this one - since you are not having problems with other mail providers it doesn't sound like the fault is at your end.
