Hi there

I have MS Outlook 2003, and Windows 2000 Professional. I have about 4000 business contacts and do not know if importing this amount of data into MS Outlook will be workable or not.

Are 4000 contacts too much for MS Outlook ?
What is the workable limit of contacts for MS Outlook ?

I basically want to keep track of mailouts, phone contacts, and customer visits for these contacts; and perform selective mail merges using the contacts list.

Any help would be appreciated.

Yes. It can be done and Outlook 2003 can take many addresses (I have about 5500). Outlook 2003 stores pst files (the files that keep all of your emails, addresses, etc.) in a “Unicode” type file. This format can hold much more data than the non-Unicode type pst files prior to Outlook 2003. Many people have migrated to Outlook 2003 because of its ability to store more information in the pst files. You will have to create a new pst file.

Go to outlook 2003, click Help, search “non-unicode”. You will get the following...

Quote from MS Office Online Help:

"There is no automatic way of converting a Microsoft Outlook 97-2002 Personal Folders file (.pst) to a Unicode-capable Microsoft Outlook Personal Folders file (.pst) file. The easiest way to convert a non-Unicode .pst file is to create a new data file in the Microsoft Outlook Personal Folders file (.pst) format that supports Unicode and then import items from the old data file to the new Microsoft Outlook Personal Folders file (.pst)".

thanks scottsmith

that gives me some confidence to continue that way
