MS Optical mouse Back Button fails after several days

I have a Microsoft optical mouse, connected via the included USB-PS2 adapter into the PS2 mouse port on a recent model computer running Windows 2000. After several days of operation, the back button stops working in all applications. Unplugging the mouse and reconnecting it solves the problem for another few days. A replacement mouse exhibits the same problem, so it's unlikely a problem with the mouse.

Any ideas on a fix?

How about a work-around that doesn't involve getting access to the back of my computer to disconnect/reconnect the mouse every few days?

Try:
Use Device Manager to disable the PS/2 port. Then re-enable the port.

Also, you could use a standard ps2 mouse instead of changing the usb connector to ps2.

bcastner - sorry to be confused, but how do I do this? If I disable the mouse, how can I re-enable it? I presume the mouse won't be working.
