I have MS Office 2003,standard, running on Windows XP. I would love to get rid of the Office shortcut bar that always shows up. I understand that the shortcut bar was a feature of Office 97 not included in 2003. I find no remnants of Office 97 on my list of programs. The shortcut bar doesn't show up in Office tools/features that I can remove. How can I get rid of this shortcut bar? Help appreciated.

Hi Ken,

Have you checked your Windows Startup folder? ISTR that's where older versions of Office put the shortcut to the Office shortcut bar.

Yes, it is in the startup list. But if I remove it there, then I have to use Selective Startup all the time to keep it off. Can you tell me how to remove it permanently from startup?

If you had 97 on your system before and if it wasn't removed properly, then chances are short-cut bar still exists as one of the installed components.

See if this helps at all:

Goto:
Start;Control Panel;Add/Remove Programs;Click Microsoft Office; Click Change; Click Add/Remove Features; Expand using the “+” before Office Tools; Choose Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar; Choose Not Available with the red X; Click Update.

Thanks. I've tried this route several times, but the shortcut bar is not listed as one of the office tools--only the major office components are there.

Hi Ken,

IIRC, you should be able to expand the shortcut bar and change its options to not start next time Windows starts.

A couple of other options you might try:
1. Go to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup, left-click on Properties, and right-click on the Microsoft Office shortcut, then remove the -b and -o switches from the command line (target).
2. open the registry and locate HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office
under that there'll be one or more version numbers. Expand those and you sould find one with Shortcut Bar. Navigate to that and change the AutoStart key value to 0.
