A friend is recovering from a hard drive crash. His Office 2000 is an upgrade version. He cannot locate whatever he upgraded from. He thinks there may have been a competitive upgrade and possibly a later upgrade to that. Is there a way to install without the prior software, if not what is the most cost effective way to buy an older version of something upgradable (Office 95 or 97?).

Here's the official word on what qualifies your friend to install the Office 2000 update:
Lotus, WordPerfect and Microsoft Works are likely to be the least expensive things to purchase if he doesn't already own them.
