Before being upgraded to Office 2007 at work, I used 2003. Previously in versions 2000 - 2003, I've always been able to close the last open document, and Excel would close as well. Now, since the upgrade (or either since I accidentally changed an option, perhaps, I have to close the last document and THEN close Excel, it just won't close Excel on closing the last document/workbook.

Does anyone know off hand if there is an option for changing this behaviour, and if so, what/where is it?

Thanks,

By design Excel isn't supposed to Close after closing the document. That's why they have two different commands, Close and Exit. If it closed for you before, then you had some sort of customization in place.

I suspect that the behavior you're observing that is different than you're used to is that in 2007 there is, for some stupid reason, [!]NOT[/!] not a difference between the two different Xs at the top right of the screen.

In 2003 and previous versions, there was one X associated with the workbook and a different X associated with the application.

If you selected the X at the top right corner of the workbook, that workbook would close.

If you selected the X at the top right corner of the application, the application would close, along with any workbooks that were open.

Not so in 2007!!

Both Xs perform identical functions, only closing the active workbook.

This is not an option - there is no way to 'fix' this to preform the way that (from what I can tell) everyone wants it to perform.

But there are a couple of workarounds....

1) You can customize the Quick Access Toolbar to include a button that will close the application.

2) Double click the Office Button to close the application and any number of open workbooks.

Thanks, anotherhiggens! That will do great. For one, I had no clue that double-clicking the office button made any difference, so that was neat, at least - though it wouldn't be much different than clicking the "X" twice. I tried both methods, and I like the Quick Access Toolbar method best, so that's what I'm going with, personally. Thanks a ton!

xlhelp, I realize there's a difference - well at least you'd think there was - between the 2 Xs. I'd actually tried with both, and it was rather annoying.

I'm just glad it wasn't my imagination. Then again, if it were just an option I had changed, then I'd be even gladder - b/c it could be fixed. [wink]
