my wife installed ms-dos version 6.22 and now i can not get windows to boot ,it has a config.sys error and says it is missing files 1 through 17 {missing or corrupt} how do i uninstall this or format the hard drive to reinstall windows 98 without a restore disk .. all i have is a windows 98 disk

Your wife didn't make a full 6.22 install, for whatever reason some of the DOS utilities didn't extract.

You're locked into a 98 reinstall, but do what is called an overlay install, put the windows back on top of where it originally was to save your links to programs and data.
Otherwise you'll lose your data and have to reinstall your programs.

After reflection, your best shot is to make a full DOS install from the existing version, installing from floppy, and let it overwrite the existing DOS installation. That should get the driver files you need installed in \DOS.

Then on reboot to c:, rename the config and autoexec files to something else and run the 98 setup from the CD.

My suspicion is that you have a full install 98 or SE and the install stuff will be available once the files required for the CD access are available under DOS.
