Is the MS Anti-spyware beta program considered a firewall ?
Should the XP firewall be turned on when it is running ?
Does it prevent trojans and worms and viruses or just malware type of infections?
1. The MS Antispyware beta is not a firewall.
2. The XP firewall should be on when it is running, provided you have no other firewall (eg Kerio, Zonealarm) running.
3. MS Antispyware will protect against malware infections that are covered within its database, just like antivirus software will protect against viruses, trojans and worms within their signature lists.
This is why both sorts of application have to be frequently updated.
Windows AntiSpyware (Beta) is a security technology that helps protect Windows users from spyware and other potentially unwanted software. Known spyware on your PC can be detected and removed. This helps reduce negative effects caused by spyware including slow PC performance, annoying pop-up ads, unwanted changes to Internet settings, and unauthorized use of your private information. Continuous protection improves Internet browsing safety by guarding over fifty (50) ways spyware can enter your PC.
Participants in the worldwide SpyNet™ community play a key role in determining which suspicious programs are classified as spyware. Microsoft researchers quickly develop methods to counteract these threats, and updates are automatically downloaded to your PC so you stay up to date.
..
By and large it does OK with malware, but don't rely on it for trojans/viruses. Get something that is suited for those needs.
Thank you both for the replies, I appreciate your help with understanding this better.
I wish the definition by MS was a little more clear as to if it BLOCKS malware or just REMOVES it, if detected.
"Windows AntiSpyware (Beta) is a security technology that HELPS PROTECT Windows users from spyware and other potentially unwanted software".
and " Microsoft researchers quickly develop methods to COUNTERACT these threats, and updates are automatically downloaded to your PC so you stay up to date".
I interpret "helps protect" and "counteract" as meaning that it PREVENTS spyware from getting on the machine. I guess this is why I thought (as you are saying incorrectly) that it might be considered a firewall.
So to clarify and finalize, you both saying that it doesn't block malware, it just removes it, correct ?
I can see where the confusion comes in as the Real time protection agents in MSASB do provide some of the funtions provided by most firewalls. i.e real time prevention of changes to system setting and files. This is more than the function of a simple spyware file scanner like AdAware or spybot. So there is some blurrng of edges, but thats a good thing in my opinion.
[red]GNBM 4th Feb[/red] More on and other neat UK stuff at forum1091 Steve: Delphi a feersum engin indeed.
It is designed to Block unwanted software from getting on your pc.
However as these are constantly evolving, even with the best will in the world, some may still get on. Once MS have spotted this as threat it will try to stop it getting on in the first place. However as many people may of already been infested with it, the removal portion of the software will attempt to remove it.
There is no such thing as a secure computer.
Only the truly stupid believe they know everything.

Actually, I should add another caveat to #2 above:
The XP firewall should be on when it is running, provided you have no other firewall (eg Kerio, Zonealarm) running and it will not interfere with corporate network communications and management.
Thanks all again for the good information. I do have the firewall turned on as well as you suggested, thx.
I understand better about the hazy line of defining a firewall versus a spyware blocker/real-time scanner after reading all the definitions of a firewall that I could find:
Also, I have been delving into all the options and tools of MSASB and I find the information and the choice of settings are quite useful. Its explanations of the real time agents under 'tools' are quite understandable, unlike most of the language used in Windows OS Help. (It's been said that if you are knowledgeable enough to understand all that is written in the help menus than you probably don't need to use them!)
And as is mentioned in spyware forums frequently, the xp firewall is weak on monitoring and controlling outgoing transmissions. Supposedly OneCare Live, that is to be included in Vista, corrects this weakness.
It's here in Beta version if anyone wants to check it out.
Not sure and I have to wonder why it is only available to US residents. Has anyone tried this yet ?
