I have recently thrown out a Microsoft Server and replaced it with a Linux Server. I would like do the same to the workstations. However, at the moment we run several MS Access databases. I am looking for an "easy" way to convert Access databases to MySQL (or other Linux based db). I do not consider myself a programmer, hence an "easy" solution would be nice. I realise this is not a simple request. However, there must have been many other people in similar situations and any pointers would be appreciated.

Nigel.

no i haven't done it, i just wanted to mention that there are utilities out there that will help you do the conversion, and you can find them in google by searching for the phrase "access to mysql"

Access is not really a database. It normally uses Jet or SQL Server Desktop Edition as its database. To move either of these is relatively easy - you don't need to be a programmer and you don't really need any special tools. Just export each table and then use mysqlimport to create MySQL tables.

Getting a replacement for Access itself - queries, reports, macros, applications forms and so on is more tricky. Sun Office has some sort of user friendly database front end. Maybe its worth running a Windows emulator on your workstations so you can keep Access.

Thanks guys.
I found a GPL product call Rekall which is an Access lookalike front end. This may do the trick but it means that every db has to be rebuilt in Rekall.

So it doesn't do the trick, then.

(For other readers, Rekall is a database front-end that uses Python for scripting)
