I created a MS Access database for our club of about 275 members. Our Secretary is not very computer savvy. Some way or another he got our .mdb saved as a MS Access MDE database. He usually compacts and repairs the database and sends it to me so I can make labels. His OE will not let the MDE database be sent to me as an attachment. As a matter of fact it seems quite proud that it has stripped the malicious MDE database from the out going mail. How do I get the database recovered and back to *.mdb on his PC? Thanks everyone.

You got my sensory perceptions overloaded. What are you asking?

Why can't you get the original .mdb? It's still there... on his PC. Maybe he doesn't want you to modify it?

Larry.

If the other guy renames the .MDE file and makes it a .txt or some such he will be able to mail it to you, The latest version of outlook strips MDE files as they can carry malicious code.

Secondly whats he done with the original database file, unless he's over written it it should stil be there.

Thanks, dhulbert, yes he has overwritten it and he does not know how he did so. I went into Windows Explorer and searched for the *.mdb and it was not there. Like I say, he is not very computer savvy. I read in the MS help, that if overwritten it can cause the *.mdb to be lost. Is there a way to get it back in the original format and do away with the MDE format? Thanks again.

Do you stil have a copy of the database fromt he last time he sent it to you.

If so you could import the tables etc from the MDE into the database and that should bring it back upto date, I dont think you can rollback and MDE to a MDB.

Yes, I have the February copy on my computer. We have only added a few members since. I will do the import and then go back and update the database. Then I'll go over to his house and delete the MDE and replace it with the new .mdb copy. I didn't think about importing, wasn't even sure it could be done. Thanks again dhulbert.

LarryE,

You may want to protect the MDB file in windows so he can't delete it.

Dan

Thanks, Dan, I hope I can get the MDE table to print out and then I'll update the MDB. And protect it. Thanks again

dhulbert, amd Dan, I did what you suggested and had him put .txt at the end of the file name. When he sent it, I guess Windows XP put the .mde back on it. When I got the attachment is was "filename.txt.mde". What now? Thanks in advance for your help. Larry

It is unlikely that XP put the .mde in back for you.

When you renamed the file did Explorer warn you that it was not a good idea to change the extension?

What probable happened is that if the file was called MyAccessDB.mde, you could only see MyAccessDB and when renaming it simply changed it to MyAccessDB.txt leaving the unseen extension part intact.

Make sure that you can see the file extensions in Explorer
(Tools | Folder Options ...) then On the View Tab make sure that 'Hide extensions for known file types' is UNchecked.

Thanks, earthandfire, that makes sense. I wondered why I could not see the extension. We will try it again tomorrow and I'm sure it will work this time. Great tip and thanks again.

Glad to be of help. From what you say it sounds as if that was the problem - otherwise its back to the drawing board [smile]

Thanks, earthandfire, mission accomplished. I got the database and we can now send it back and forth. I could not have done it without your help. Hopefully, some day I can return the favor and help someone myself. Larry
