When the Win98 machine is booted, it loads the desktop wallpaper and then hangs and does not display the logon screen. At this time the task manager is showing that "mprexe" is not responding. This machine is running on an NT network running Exchange 5.5 and also running on a Novell network. Oddly enough, when the machine is booted with the patch cable not plugged into the NIC card it properly boots. I have tried reseating the network card but that was not the issue. Any suggestions?

daunderpar,

you may have an irq conflict. check in device manager.

I used to get that one all the time... Actually, there are a number of reasons why you might see that message...

One thing we I found that wasn't mentioned in any of the Microsoft TID's I read was that it would sometimes be related to a networked printer... If I deleted all the printers and recreated them, the problem would go away... Other times, that didn't work.

Sometimes the .PWL file can become corrupted and cause that. You can try going to C:\WINDOWS on the machine in question and renaming the .PWL file for the user, then reboot and logon again and see if the message goes away.

There are other issues that casue it, but those were the most common I found.

You don't by any chance have SQL 7 installed on that PDC, do you?? SQL 7 installs a reg key on the server that 98 and 95 stations can't handle... if you do, let me know and I'll dig up the specifics for you...

Thanks for the info. Tried deleting the .pwl files, but that did not solve the issue. Also, we are not running SQL 7, but thanks for the heads-up. The only thing I have yet to try are the printers.
