I have a site that has links to MP3s . I have it hosted at directnic(to save redirecting problems). My problem is directnic doesn't support MP3 file types. the MP3s are totaly legal, can anyone tell me of a good server that supports MP3s. I am able to support the site on my own server at ;

Just to clarify, what your asking is if there is a hosting company which allows you to have mp3s on their servers?

Whatever you end up doing, BE VERY CAREFULL! RIAA is going sue-crazy right now and have sent out very nasty letters even by mistake based on coincidental naming of mp3 files on servers. Just be cautious, because the last thing anyone wants is to be forced to go to court to prove the file's legality.

If you're going to offer full songs for download, just put them into a zip file for safety's sake.

surely they will get bitten by counter-sueing?

I mean if I had a website which offered my personal recordings (say, of me snoring) in .mp3 format and I had to go to court to prove they were legal files.. couldn't i then sue them back for legal costs and (heh) extras like defamation of character (forcing me to have to go to court to defend myself from wrong accusations) ..

the .mp3 format isn't illegal, its a file format. Its whats IN the files that they are arguing about.. so I would say don't worry about what you are using (mp3 or whatnot) but rather what's inside the files.

I'm guessing some free hosting providers don't allow .mp3 files just to save headaches .. 'you get what you pay for'. Zipping them seems a decent workaround.

FYI, to be technical, the only way someone could counter-sue, according to the Digital Millineum Copyright Act, is if the accusser willfully knows that they're in error when making the claim. RIAA is using bot programs to scour the net and the bots have made mistakes already, and there's really no way the accussed can fight back in court with the current laws.

When RIAA goes out and buys the senetors & congressmen to write the laws in their favor, of course they're going to be one sided. =(

Thanks for the input. I'm still looking...... I only use the mp3 format because of the compression ratio. Too bad the file type has such a bad rap. Zip files don't do it for the users I'm interested in. I want them to hear the music with as little hassle as possible.

You might try encoding them in whatever the M$ audio encoding format is (not sure myself, only use mp3's here), I think RIAA's bots are scanning for .mp3 files only.

You are obviously in the clear with regards to your rights to post those mp3 files on the internet, but unfortunately RIAA have been establishing a "guilty until proven innocent" precedence. Chances are you will post the mp3's on the internet and everything will be fine, but you should atleast be aware that RIAA is very agressively targetting providers of mp3 files.

What about the .wma windows media format? basicly the same compression. windows media player plays it automaticaly, mac users most likely have something that will play windows media files like winamp, real audio, etc.

A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools.
