Yesterday i upgraded Mozilla Firefox to a New version (2.0.0.7).

I think my firewall rules are stopping the new version
load.

Background.
------------
I use AVG Vers 7x (run daily)
Kerio Personal Firewall 2.1.5x ( the last free one)

Also AVG anti spyware 7.5 - run about once per week
Also Spybot, Adaware occasionally /or when i suspect a problem.

I've also configured Kerio Personal Firewall 2.1.5x with
about 40 rules. Some of the rules are general, others
specific to each application - Free Agent (news),
Pegasus (email), etc.

I compiled the rules according to one reference/site's
recommendation's then tweaked the rules according to the applications i run. Checking logs, etc

I forget offhand the reference site
but there will be a note somewhere on this PC.

The firewall log doesn't show which rule is stopping
Mozilla loading. shock! Horror! I've had to resort to
IE to post / read tek tips.

I've been googling away for an hour or two. BUT i've been naughty & used all my ISP broadband allocation & I've been throttled down from about 100k to 3k. Googling is a bit of a pain at dialup speeds.

I'm going to start tinkering with the firewall rules to see what the problem is. I'm posting this to see if anyone else has resolved a similar problem & perhaps avoid re-inventing the wheel.

TIA any help.

What do you mean by "Won't load", is it getting far enough to want an Internet connection?

Try "Safe Mode with Networking" and see if you have the same problem.

Before you go into Safe Mode, check your Event Viewer for any obvious errors since the update.

Try System restore and step back in time to when life was great.

Ta for the help linney.

Now i have fast[er] broadband back.
by "won't load" ie
i clik on icon.
nothing obvious happens.
no error messages
nothing disclosed in firewall log.

i tried turning the firewall off [briefly], then
clikd on icon - still nothing

I've since reverted to mozilla 2.0.0.6
This works fine.
But i do get a nag to keep updating.

Maybe not a firewall issue.
Ie I haven't enabled M$ updates &
maybe i'm too many versions of whatever
behind?

But i'm loath to fiddle too much, because
it's - 2.0.0.6 - is working.

Ta again.

Priority one is to download & install all Windows updates ASAP. Then try updating Mozilla.

What version of IE are you using? If it is still IE6 you can try this fix.

Internet Explorer Fix

If you were to do your Windows Updates you would have the opportunity to scrap IE6 and install IE7, that's your choice though.

Thanks SirBlack & linney for replies.

If i install windows updates,

(1) does that mean i cannot use sfc /scannow
- this has saved my A a few times
( fixed viri & malaware etc)
or
(2) i have to rely on setting restore points & record details
of the major ones etc. etc.

Any other gotchas ? pros ? cons of windows updates.
To simply believe M$ will get it right all the time
is tooth fairy stuff.

ta again,

From time to time there may be a scare or problem caused by Windows Updates, most of the time they only do good for your computer. A wise man might take the updates a bit slower than most of us, and if there is no uproar (over the Internet caused by dodgy updates), install them himself a few days later.

You can set Automatic Updates to Notify but not download anything until you say it's time to download.

As for SFC, that will still do its job. It will use a combination of your XP CD, ServicePack files folders and cache folder , to make sure there are no corrupted files in Windows.

Hi linney,

ta for help.

***You can set Automatic Updates to Notify but not download anything until you say it's time to download. ***

That sounds a reasonable approach.
I think i disabled Automatic Updates amongst other things
to reduce # processes in startup / & in other general tuning.
I'll see where to reset.

*** As for SFC, that will still do its job. It will use a combination of your XP CD, ServicePack files folders and cache folder , to make sure there are no corrupted files in Windows. ***

Great! I'm reassured - i thought it would only use the CD.

I'll check out the support articles later

Ta again blokes.

Finally got microsoft update to work.
After a lot of farting around trying to set ( ie restrict
svchost.exe access in Kerio Personal Firewall
(firstly) To a single x.x.x.x:y address - it didn't work
(2ndly) To a range of addresses - it didn't work either.

Eventually allowed all access / any address to get update to work.

That solved the original problem.
ie. After the microsoft updates ( about 10 or 20).
i downloaded installed firefox update to 2.0.0.7

It is now working properly, with the addins.

Is my understanding - grin apparently limited - of the url numbering sytems base over turkey?

I thought specifying a range of addresses would work like
using masks in assembler type programs [30 yrs ago experience].

ie a range of 0.0.0.1 thru 3.0.1.250
would allow 0.0.0.1 thru 3.0.1.250
& " 0.0.0.999
& " 2.250.250.250
but not 3.0.1.251

have i got that right?
where is best place to learn?
should it be a separate post?

TIA

Ian C

Hi Ian,
You can also select Download updates but let you decide when to install them. Either way, once you download & install the updates, M$ will nag you to reboot every 5 minutes to finish the installation process. If you're not ready to reboot (for whatever reason), you can stop (actually delay the time between those reminders by going to Start -> Run and type gpedit.msc in the dialog box & click Enter. Select Computer Configuration in the Group policy pane on the left -> Administrative Templates -> Windows Components -> Windows Update. Double click on Re-prompt for restart in the right pane. Select Enable & then set the number of minutes higher. I usually set clients PC's to 240. That normally gives me enough time to add and/or update any necesary apps so I only have to reboot once without having to deal with M$'s 'friendly' reminders.

Ta again to you both for your help.

Hi linney.

by a range ie meant a range of valid urls.

Sorry 'bout 999. masks would normally relate back to binary
and 255 = (2 ( to the power of 6)_ minus 1
ie the largest decimal number you can express in 6 bits.

My experience was with Honeywell-400 and 800 and 8200 mainframes. The 800 was a "word" machine & didn't have
hardware 'edit' instructions, so you had to do a lot with
masks in assembly type languages. Honeywell later got out of the mainframe business - IBM competitor at the time was the 1401.

I'll have a look & maybe post in the kerio forums & i've poked around references to host files, lmhosts etc.

My own isp does not use a fixed url but appears to use a
range of addresses.

I guess my question is going along the lines of
who "owns" urls ? domains etc.
We often get invitations to "buy" domains etc - could
be spam.

24.64.243.124 appears to be M$
also 64.4.21.10 "
also 65 ....... "

AND
if 24.64.243.124 for eg is a M$ server
would " " " 125 be a " " ?
" " " 248.x " " " " ?.
That's where i was heading with the range... idea.
Or could
24.64.243.125 some entirely different company?

If was trying to use kerio to only permit a "range" of
valid M$ servers.

can these addresses be 'forged' by viri, malaware, etc
are they often " " "

ie modifying hosts file etc.

Hi Bob

ta for the tip re specifying time before reboot.
I'll do exactly that!

i wasn't game to leave the pc for long periods.
Annoyed SWMBO no end, particularly when our rugby league
grand final was on (sunday ) yesterday.
