Moving WSS 3.0 to a new server

Currently I have a server (SHARE01) running WSS 3.0 using Sql Server 2000 database on the same server.

What I would like to do is move the database to a new Sql Server (DB01) and install WSS 3.0 on to a new server (SHARE02) using the database on DB01.

I was wondering what would be the best way to do this.

I don't know if this would be considered the best way, but last time I did this I used the STSADM tool. Admittedly I only had a handful of site collections to move.

That is, I built and configured the new farm then created the necessary web application(s) and content database(s).

Then I extracted each site collection from the old farm (using [/tt]stsadm -o backup[/tt]) and imported each into the new farm ((using [/tt]stsadm -o restore[/tt]).

As well as retaining all the site collection permissions, it also let me restore certain sites to different URLs where necessary.

Once I had moved a particular site, I disabled it on the old farm by setting it to No Access (can't remember if that's a Site Collection or Web Application setting).

However, if memory serves, I think I did have problems with the inbound email addresses on one of the collections. Reassigning the email details and restarting the SharePoint Services Timer service fixed that.

Like I say, this might not be the most elegant solution, but it worked for me and gave me the granular control I wanted.

Thanks for you telling me how you did it. It atleast gives me something to look into and it does sound like it would work for me.
