I am planning to replace my current PDC machine which is PIII, 2x19GB SCSI Drives, to P4 Same Drive. I want to use the Same SCSI Drive in the new machine. Whatever I've read, says that its not going to work, I'll have to do a complete reinstall of everything, isn't there any simpler way to do it?

One of the main reasons not to pop the old drives into the new system is that SCSI drives are not like IDE drives. IDE has the interface hardware built onto the drive whereas SCSI has the hardware on the card. That said, I wonder if you can move the drives AND controller together...

On the other hand, your drives likely are already a few years old, probably out of warranty. How long until one fails? Fast 36GB SCSI drives are now available at a good price and you can get 72GB drives too. Get 2 or 3 36GB drives and you can do mirroring for better data reliability in case one drive fails. As I recall they still come with 3 year guarantees.

I think there are some copy programs out there, but they may be expensive. Is it that you want to avoid messing with all the user accounts and other settings?

Try a keyword search for DCPROMO or other phrases. Here is a similar recent query: thread96-719438

I appreciate your helpful advice,
I will be moving the controllers and hard disk drives at the same time to the new server.
I plan to get new SCSI drives in near future, due to budget constraints I could muster only one server machine. I have disk cloning software already I will use it to clone disks. My main concern is to avoid the hassle of years of configuration and migration work done on the server, running DNS, AD, FTP, MAIL. Although FTP and MAIL are not tied to AD in my configuration setup, using third party softwares for that. I'm hoping to update the 'HAL' configuration by doing an in-place upgrade of windows 2000 Server.
