I am converting a peer to peer network to active directory. I need to be able to move each users local settings from their computer to their new domain profile. Any ideas about the best way to do this?
The main thing is to get Outlook settings with .pst file, and My Documents data moved over.

Hello,

How many users? If it is a small network, and the users listen, here is a solution:

1. Create a directory for user profiles on a domain server. Be sure to set up the appropriate permission for accessing. I suggest using one directory called "profiles" and allow read only access to all users.

2. Set up directories within profiles for each user's files (use the user name for file names). Be sure that when you set up the permissions for these that you allow full control over the files within only to the user and administrators (unless you would like others to access them). When you configure permissions there is a check box in the bottom left corner. Set it so it does not inhierit the parent directory's permissions.

3. Go to each user's account and click the profile tab. Enter the path to the user's profile directory.

4. Now have each user upload his files to his directory. You could send them an email containing a shortcut to that directory on the network. Do this now, you'll see why next. If you can't trust the users to do this you could use remote accessing or VNC to do this from your desk.

5. The next time they log onto the network, thier documents will be diverted to the network profile directory automatically. If they were to click on their documents now, they would scratch their heads and wonder where thier documents were.

If you are working with a large network things are much more complicated. Users don't use "my documents" exclusively for their docs. I don't see any way of automating the process......

I hope this is helpful.
