I need some help. I recently was notified by our main IT office that our existing domaind (dom2) was going to be removed and merged with another (dom1). I had a exchange server installed on a member server in dom2. I moved the server to dom1, but was not aware of the need to make any other changes to exchange to keep it working. Last Friday they killed dom2, and now I can't get to exchange at all. Is there any way, short of rebuilding the dom2 domain, of getting the data off the server in a way that will allow me to restore it to a new installation of exchange? My hope is that I can just re-install exchange on the server, selecting dom1 as the domain to install to. Then restore the data and go home happy.

Thanks for any help!

Desparately,

Brian

Rebuild a domain controller for domain2 so that you can bring the srver back on line. Next, establish a trust relationship between the two domains. Create an account in domain1 that will be the Exchange Service Account. Follow the instructions in the following white paper to change the service account on the existing server to this new account: Once the new account works, build a new Exchange server in Domain1 using this account and join the existing site that your old server is in. Make sure you apply the same service pack to the new server as the old server is running. You can now move the mailboxes from the old server to the new server. Be sure to move any public folders as well. Let the two servers continue to run until all users have had an opportunity to open their mail following the mailbox move (it's best to move mailboxes when they are not being used so that data doesn't get corrupted). When you are ready to shut down the old server, read this document: When the old server has been removed from the site, break the trust relationship between the domains, then shut the servers down.

I would recommend leaving the two exchange servers running together for at least a week.

Good luck,
Bob
