I will be attempting to move Sql from an older server running windows 2000 to a newer server running 2003. I have read that you need SQL server sp3 to run it on Windows 2003. We are at SP2. Should I upgrade to SP3 first and then move it to the new server? Or can I install Sql server sp3 on the newer server and then move the data over?

Upgrade first then move it. I seem to remember seeing posts of problems trying to upgrade to 2003 when SQL only has SP2.

Oh well. I guess I have to set up a test environment and play around with it a little bit. Thanks for the quick reply SQLBill.

Do a search on the forum (this one and the one for programming) for Windows 2003. I don't remember if I saw the issue on this site or another SQL Server site I participate in.

You might also check in Microsoft's Knowledge Base articles and their site for Windows 2003.

Going through the sludge in my brain, I seem to recall the issue was that the upgrade to Win2003 would just fail because SP3 was missing. And you can't apply SP3 after the install because it looks for it before it can complete. Note: This may have been fixed, a lot of people complained about it to Microsoft.
