Hello,

We deploy Office 2003 using a group policy to all our computers. The software dist. point is on a windows 2000 server that is due to be replaced in the next week or so. If we amend the group policy so that it points to the new dist. point on the new replacment 2003 server will it redeploy the whole of office?

kind regards,

In short, yes it will because you cant change the software once its published. The only way that it wont is if you used a DFS link to the software and just moved it without actually changing the dist. point.

You could TRY doing this but I don't know if it will be successful or not.

Copy the distribution folder to the new server and share it.
When you have decommissioned the old server, add its IP Address to the new server. Check DNS, add a new record in DNS for the old computers name and point it to the IP on the new server.

I do this all the time for web sites, but I don't know how UNC paths will react.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Hello,

Thanks for the reply's. Looks like we'll just have to go with the re-deployment of the software as it doesnt allow you to change the source of the package at all.

Hello.

I was thinking of perhaps using a static WINS name mapping so that the old server name actually points to the new server. I will also add a CNAME into DNS to point back to the old server so all UNC resolutions for the old server name should point to the new server - and as long as the share path is identical it *should* be ok?....

thanks

That is what I suggested above to do with DNS.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark
