Hi

My site is currently hosted by a company who is getting progressively worse, so I've asked them to re-assign the nameservers to another hosting company, who hosts another of my sites.

They (lousy co.) keep asking for all kinds of authorization, never do what they say they'll do and I'm getting nowhere. Its now 2 weeks since I asked them to do the job and I call them every day for progress reports.

Question is , can I safely just cancel my contract with them, so that my domain is no longer hosted with anyone, and then ask a new host to take me on?

Any pitfalls I should consider, apart from the obvious downtime?

The domain is registered in my name. Is there any chance of me losing my right to the domain if it is unhosted?

Thanks

Graham

Is the domain registered in your name?

If it is, you should be able to take it with you... Read any fine print with your current host. Good luck.

I have had this problem too. Lousy host that would not let us go. Eventually, I got someone from the new host to call them, repeatedly, until they let go.

Not sure if this matches but I had a problem with crappy WEBSITESOURCE.com. I am not afraid to list them here. They were horrible.
I am using Miva so my situation is a little tricky.
I contacted a new host through a referral and provided them my MIVA logon information. They were able to mirror my entire site that was on the old server. Then I went to my domain, which I owned at netsol.com and change the DNS names to the new server once I confirmed my new host had everything ready for me. This only took a short time to do.
However my DNS change through NETSOL.com had to refresh which can take up to 72 hours.
Once everything switched over I canceled my old host.
My new host by the way is cybrhost.com.
They were awesome to deal with.

Since you own the domain you should have control of where you host at. At least that’s the way it has always been for me.

Hi mate,

If you registered the domain through a register other than the host, you just need to contact the register to transfer the domain.

As for cancelling the contract, you need to make sure they don't have a miminum time that you must stay on their servers, and if they do that you are over that.

Hope this helps

As owner of the domain, contact the registrar that you registered the site with. A whois will usually tell you who the registrar is, if you allowed the host company to register for you. It may take a few emails or a fax to prove your identity, but you should be able have that info changed. Most registrars now have a control panel that will allow you to change the DNS info yourself.

When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

Hi everyone ...

Thanks for all your suggestions - they are all sensible - but my host can't seem to agree!

I've done the WhoIs, and sent them a copy - I'm the owner of the domain, they are the administrators - should be so simple...

I've just found they have an unofficial site for unhappy customers ... - so at least I'm not on my own.

Grrr!

Graham

If you own the domain, do you not have a log in name and password to change your DNS names to another host?
